Spurgeon's Bottle

Jessa shared: Photo repost from Jeremy Vuolo! How's this for a little #SeeThroughSaturday! 💙 That's my boy! Yes, he's 22 months old. Yes, he drinks water from a sippy cup, and yes, he still prefers to drink much of his milk/kefir from his bottle--especially before nap/bedtime. (TBH, I wish he wouldn't have weaned himself early, and would've bf till 2. There, I said it.🙈) .

So there ya have it. If you are experiencing anxiety over this, please share all your wisdom and perfect parenting advice in the comments section below. 😇

  1. Perfect parent = loving your child unconditionally. Let him have it for bed/naps for now. As long as it's not hurting his teeth or anything else who cares. :)

  2. I made a big feal out of being a big boy for my son. We talked about him stopping the bottle and I gave him a time limit, like I'm two weeks or on your birthday you'll be 2. Time to be a big boy and get rid of the bottles. Then when the day came I had him throw them in the trash then we took the trash out and the trash man came. Dud he cry for it? A little bit but when he realized he wasn't getting it back he got used to it.

  3. Jessa, it's not horrible that he still takes a bottle, but he is moving into the age where it will be soon time to give it up. When you are ready, try a sippy cup of milk before nap and bedtime, then lay him down and rub his back or read a book....you're not doing anything wrong, but he is getting close to the age where he should probably not have a bottle, better for the teeth too. You're a great mom, don't worry about it.

  5. I agree with the post above. You will parent every single child differently. Do what your instincts tell you is best, and the bottle will work itself out naturally. The fact that you care shows that you are already the "perfect parent". :)

  6. If it were me, and if course it's not, but I'd tell him.."Hey Spurgeon, you're a big boy now and big boys always drink out of big boy cups.."

  7. Nuk and other brands make transition sippy cups that resemble the bottle. I would encourage to not allow him to sleep with the bottle in his mouth if it still has milk in it( take it out while he is asleep). This can lead to dental caries and ear infections. In the end it is your baby and if your pediatrician has no issue then it is not worth pressing the issue if he is not ready.

  9. Being a mom is so tricky, I'm experiencing my own anxiety in other aspects of being a mom to my 3 year and 1 year old. Everyone has thoughts and advice but whatever you chose to do, trust yourself and do it full heartedly (for yourself and for him, these small babies get confused when we waver or give up, then need guidelines and follow though).

Now saying all that, if you're asking for 'advise' mine is.... remove the bottle all together. Use the sippy cup for milk, water, even watered down juice (sometimes some fluids is better then nothing, especially for consipation issues). He isn't starving (he is beautiful and big) and it may take some time but he will get into the rhythm. As a parent we are making the best, safest choices for our little ones, and we know about the bottle has to come to an end for the kids for a reason, so trust yourself and know your doing it for HIS best interest. My 1 year old, went from BF to cup but wouldn't take any of the 1000 oz I pumped from the cup and he wasn't use to the bottle. He also wouldn't drink any sort of dairy or non dairy from the cup and I was so worried about him getting enough but with doctors and friends they told me through his food he was getting enough calories and calcium. And after about 3 months he stared drinking anything breastmilk, dairy from the cup too. I had donated most the breastmilk but the little he got a few months later was just fine too.

Good luck and remember you're an amazing mom, keep up the hard work! (Let's all know we are amazing for what we do :). )

  10. Just so long as the bottle is not affecting his teeth there should not be any issues. Have a check up with the dentist and make sure he has no cavities/bottle rot developing and that his teeth are aligned properly. I will say the dentist will probably tell you that milk before sleeping is not a good idea the sugar sits in their mouth. They will tell you to give him water before sleeping.

  11. The wording seems passive aggressive in regards to "if you're experiencing anxiety over this" so I'm not sure if you're actually looking for advice on this or not. If you are, Nuby sells an awesome bottle/sippy transition cup that comes with the bottle-style nipple, as well as a sippy spout so you can transition baby with ease and comfort. All of my little ones transitioned with this cup at 10-11 months and it is still in use today, with my almost 2 year old who uses it for his hemp milk in the morning. Aside from that, he has a regular hard-spout water bottle or is frequently drinking from a regular glass now, as he sees his older siblings do so. If you are not seeking advice, feel free to disregard all of that.

Side note: Such a handsome little man!

  12. Its normal for his age. You might want to try a sippy cup with a soft spout, it will feel similar to a bottle but help make it easier to fully transition to a normal hard spout sippy cup and regular cup. Before you know it he'll forget the bottle.

  18. Jessa, your last paragraph is worded very snotty. Since you asked for advice, here it is. He looks like the size of a 3 year old, not a child under 2. Take the bottle away already and let him cry it out. Don't give in and he'll realize he's not getting it back and will quiet down.

    1. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that they have been judge hard for allowing their almost two year old to have a bottle.
