Question from a "19 Kids and Counting" fan: Do the Duggars have special family traditions for Easter?

Instead of doing the typical egg hunt and candy, we’ve made our own way of celebrating Easter. We call it Resurrection Sunday because we really want the children to know why we’re celebrating Easter. We like to explain to the children that this is a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Jim Bob and I really wanted the kids to understand the true meaning of Easter, that it isn’t about all the candy and eggs.

The day before Easter, we get ready by doing crafts and baking cookies. One of our favorite projects involves writing the gospel message from scripture on paper that the kids can decorate. We laminate them with contact paper so they last for years. Every year, we pull out the old ones and you can really see the transition from year to year as the kids get older and their art changes.

We also love to make cookies and decorate them; they’ll be in the shape of a cross or a heart to symbolize Easter. The older ones help their little siblings with the cookies and crafts and share their Easter memories. I love to listen to them talk about how they used to ice their cookies or do their crafts when they were little. It’s such a sweet way to make memories.

We don’t do candy or Easter baskets for the kids, instead we make individual bags filled with their favorite treats. Not candy, but other goodies that the kids don’t get much any other time of the year. Snacks like beef jerky, canned potato chips and pickles, of course! The Duggars all love pickles. Most of the time in our house, we’ll buy the large containers of cheaper pickles. But at Easter, we splurge on little jars of the more expensive, refrigerated pickles. Each child will get their own jar with their name on it. I put it all together in a pretty treat bag for each of them and decorate them with a cross on the outside.

Then, on Easter Sunday, we go to church and have fellowship dinner, and it’s just such a special time. For us, it’s all about Resurrection Sunday and what that means, and about those sweet memories that you choose to make for your family and your kids.

Travel question from a "19 Kids and Counting" fan: What were some of your most memorable moments from your trip to China?

One of the most interesting things was the response we’d get from the crowds when we all walked around together. We’re a very unusual sight! We’re all blonde or fair-haired, and a really huge group. Our interpreter would try and tell people that this is all one family. And boy, I thought people were going to fall over. They just couldn’t even fathom having a family as large as ours. Even the double stroller was such an eye catcher for the Chinese. I don’t think many people had ever seen one before. They just don’t have much need for double strollers because typically most families have only one child. Every time that double stroller came out, people would crowd around and look in the stroller to see what was in there. Are there really two kids? And sure enough, Mackynzie and Michael would be in the stroller, and they’d all be going “Oh!” and “Ah!” A lot of people would come up and touch their blonde hair. In China, they were not the least bit afraid to come up and just touch your kids’ heads. It was really interesting!

The Great Wall was a really amazing destination to visit. Just going up those huge mountains, climbing the massive structure and hearing the history of the Wall was incredible. We got to experience the older part of the Wall one day, and then we went to the more modern tourist area the next day. On the way up, there is a market where they sell souvenirs, and you barter and try to get the best bargains. That was a lot of fun. The kids especially loved that, trying to get good deals and bargains on stuff to take home. I think the local people got the real bargains, though. We thought we were getting a deal, but really, they probably got the better end of the deal! But it was fun bartering. We came back with some wonderful treasures from China and fantastic family memories.

Travel question from a "19 Kids and Counting" fan: What were some of your favorite moments from your trip to Japan?

Asia is such an amazing place. The best part was really the joy of visiting another country and getting to experience it with the whole family together. That was just an opportunity of a lifetime for our family. We were just thrilled to be there!

We went to Japan first and visited Tokyo and Kyoto, which are two of the largest cities in Japan. And they’re absolutely beautiful cities. We were so amazed at the architecture; the buildings are huge and immaculate. My boys kept noticing how many unique styles of architecture they use, too. The shapes of the buildings are incredible.

For the boys, one of their favorite experiences in Japan was the samurai training. They were taught by one of the best teachers in in Japan. Even Jim Bob learned a few skills. As a matter of fact, a few days after the boys did the training, we saw their teacher on television! The kids just loved that.

For the girls, the opportunity to dress up in traditional Japanese clothing was especially memorable. The outfits were absolutely beautiful. There are layers and layers and layers of clothing involved in traditional dress! You are so heavy by the time you get all the pieces on that you can hardly walk or breathe. It’s impossible to bend over; you don’t do much while you’re in that clothing! But it’s only for very special occasions like a wedding. We really enjoyed the beauty of that experience.

Overall, it was the type of trip that we won’t forget quickly. We had so many wonderful experiences as a family in Asia!

Duggars do Asia: Part 2

The duggars are invited to be guest on a tv show called "Unbelievable". Jackson made a last minute dash to the bathroom with the help of the film crew and he made it back in time.  The family heads to tour Tokyo to see the ins and outs of Japan's culture. Josie is very strong will when it comes if she doesn't want to do something and this time it came around to the fish tasting. Jim Bob try the fish. The TV show sets up a carnival for the family to do. At the end of it the family would have a compete to see who would catch the most fish. The duggars caught eight more fishes then Master Lida.
Up Next the family is heading to Kyoto by using the bullet train that goes really fast. The family makes it off in time in their stop. Jim Bob is asking for directions and accidently uses spanish "Gracias" to someone that was helping them. Jim Bob is encouraging everyone to not hesitate to ask for help when you are lost.
Grandma Duggar and Michelle take the girls to dress up like Japanese gishas and Jinger was unsure about the hairdos and the make up but she ends up doing it with the other girls after getting encouragement. They go and show it off to the little girls and Johannah turns into a big help by convicing her sisters and niece to figure out who is who. The girls (Jennifer, Jordyn, Josie, and Mackynzie) were scared at first and finally warming up to seeing their sisters and mom dress up differently. The little girls got the experience of dressing up and they all enjoy it.
Jim Bob takes his sons and grandson to learn how to do Samurai fighting. They get to see an traditonal Samurai and then get do it themselves. Jim Bob pulls his sword after being caught off guard when someone asks to court one of the girls. The boys enjoyed the experience with their father.
After their experiences, the family heads for a little rest at their hotel. Normally at the hotel with the guest are separted by men and women on each floor. However the hotel decides to give the duggars a pass on that rule. The crew ask Jordyn and Josie if they like taking naps and they respond that they don't like taking naps. Jim Bob seems like to be the only one that takes a nap while the rest of the family play a game.

Anna heads to get some pregnancy test but decides to wait to learn that if she is pregnant in China where Josh and Anna will celebrate another year of marriage. Anna had to make sure that she was getting the pregnancy test and not something else. She also had to find where the check out was.

The family is ready for the next activity which is going to a pickle restaurant. The city is known for it's pickes and the family loves pickles all expect for Jim Bob. The family enjoys the pickles.
At the end of the show, the family enjoys recaping how their trip is in Kyoto and what their favorite part of the day. Next week, the family is heading to China. We get a glimpse of what happens next week went they visit a home where children don't have any parents and Josh and Anna will learn if they are expecting or not.

A book update!

Jill had revealed the name of their book "Growing up Duggar: The Duggar girls share their view of 
life inside American's most well-known super-sized family".

Now we can tell you when the book comes out: November 5th, 2013. The book is about 240 pages long and was written by Jana, Jill, Jessa, Jinger
