Michelle Duggar on Celebrating the Fourth of July

For our family, the Fourth of July is a time for celebrating with friends and family and sharing our gratitude for the freedoms we have in this country.
The children love to study about the great individuals that founded our country, the men and women that came before us. The kids and I will gather around and talk about what freedom means to us. We discuss the definition of freedom and the kids draw pictures in red, white and blue to illustrate it. They’ll post those around the house with other patriotic favorites, like the Pledge of Allegiance, just to remind us that there are people who have given up their freedom for our freedom. We’re not going to take that lightly and be selfish about what we say and do. We know it's a great privilege to live in this country and to enjoy the freedoms that we have that others have given their blood, lives, and wealth for.
To celebrate the day, we usually get together with family and friends and have a big cookout. It’s usually a big group with friends and extended family gathering at our home or the house of friends. We’ll all have a big meal together and cook out. Then, we take time as a group to pray for our nation and for our country, for our leaders, for those that have gone before us that have given their lives for our freedom.
At the end of the day, we set off fireworks or sometimes we’ll go and see a big fireworks display in our area. It depends on where we are and what's going on in our busy family schedule. It's just a very special day of our family getting to celebrate with others the freedom and privileges that we enjoy here in America.
