Learning how to be tactful

How Michelle Duggar Teaches Her Kids to Be Tactful
FAMILY TRAVEL on 08.16.13
19 Kids and CountingBIO

Question from a "19 Kids and Counting" fan: As you travel with your family and meet people from different cultural backgrounds, how do you teach your children to be polite and open-minded about foreign cultures and experiences?
It really is all about teaching them tact. When we are in a public place, the kids need to show respect for others, and that means that we’re not loud and boisterous with our behavior. We don’t want to loudly draw attention to ourselves and we want it to be a pleasant experience for everyone involved. I try to teach them to be tactful and not to blurt out questions or statements about people or situations that might be new or different to them. We want them to come and ask questions, to whisper in my ear or daddy’s ear, and ask the questions they might have. Because they do have questions and want to know about things that are new to them.
Jim Bob and I try to explain that some cultures are different than ours, and that’s ok. When we travel to other countries, I want to give the kids the freedom to ask questions of myself and our family members. It’s important not to hurt the feelings of people that aren’t exactly the same as us, so I want them to come to me first. I’ve explained to them that others may wonder why they are asking a certain question because it’s about something that is common for their culture. It’s important for them to be sensitive to the feelings of others.
We are happy to talk with the kids about whatever questions are on their minds. If we can’t talk immediately when a question arises, we ask them to remember the question, remind us later, and we’ll talk about it privately, when we’re able. We’ve got a ways to go to train our kids in the proper etiquette of being around other people in public places. Believe me, ours aren’t angels!
When we travel, we’ll sometimes have a situation where our children aren’t behaving in the correct way; they’ll be climbing on something they aren’t supposed to, or making noise or something like that. If that happens, I’ll have them go back and ask for forgiveness and apologize for their inappropriate behavior. So believe me, we are still in the learning phases of all of that with a number of our younger ones!
With children, they just speak (and do) what’s on their mind -- often. They don’t even think about it, they just have the simplicity and curiosity of a child. We’ve learned the importance of being tactful and gracious to others and want them to learn, too.

the duggar favourite summer activities for kids

The Duggars' Favorite Summer Activities for Kids

FAMILY MATTERS on 08.12.13

Question from a "19 Kids and Counting" fan: What are some inexpensive ways to keep the kids occupied in the summer?
In our home, we do our schoolwork through the summer because we like to take our longer breaks in the spring and the fall. We’ll spend the early part of the day homeschooling, and save play time for the afternoons when it cools off outside. They work hard and it’s a great motivation to finish everything on the checklist.
Sometimes we’ll go outside, turn on the sprinklers and fill up the little pool under the shade tree and have some nice, cool outdoor fun. The kids recently brought out the Slip ‘N Slide which is always a favorite, too.
The kids like to make their own special snacks for the summer. James loves to make popsicles with a kit we got him for his birthday. We also got him a hot air popcorn popper; it was on a clearance sale for $3. You would think it was the best thing ever! He is my chef right now. He’ll come up with recipes and each one of the siblings can place an order for their favorite. For the popsicles, he might freeze bananas and strawberries, blend them up and freeze them in the popsicle holders. You’ll hear his little popcorn machine going, and then he’s handing out the popsicles that he has concocted.
Also, the kids love to have their own picnics in the backyard. I’ll opt out on what I had planned for lunch and let them plan their picnic (with a little guidance from me). I want them to have something fairly healthy so I’ll help them cut up apples and some of their favorites like pickles and green beans with vinegar. I might make up some macaroni and cheese, or something simple like that, and let them serve themselves with their little cups and bowls. When the sun is really hot, they’ll take a sheet and make a fort with all of the lawn furniture or set up under a large shady tree so they’re not sweltering. And they are just as happy as can be because it’s all their idea!
The rule is once you’re finished, you bring everything back in and put it where it belongs – sheets in the dirty clothes hamper, all the dishes in the sink and no leftovers in the backyard.
The picnic takes a good two, maybe two-and-a-half hours for them from start to finish. And I’m happy with that. It’s a good way to spend their time and a special treat on hot summer days.

Michelle Duggar on Dealing with Difficult Children

Michelle Duggar on Dealing with Difficult Children

FAMILY MATTERS on 08.02.13
19 Kids and CountingBIO

Photo: DCL
Question from a "19 Kids and Counting" fan:  How do you help your children learn to be well-behaved and not influenced by the bad behavior of other children?
We are around a lot of families, and a lot of children with different personalities. My older ones have learned and are able to graciously stand alone around external influences. But those younger ones so often can be sucked into bad behavior, bad words, and bad attitudes. Long before we ever get to that point, we talk about it together. I let the kids know where we’re going, what we’ll be doing going and that very likely there will be other little ones running around playing. I want them to know that if there’s something that they know mommy and daddy have said to them, we don’t do that, or we don’t say that, or that’s not appropriate for our family, the right response for them is to not participate. It’s also important that they know in their heart it’s not just what they do -- it’s the attitude of the heart while they’re doing it. If there’s selfishness, hatefulness, hitting, kicking, all those kinds of things, those behaviors start with the attitude of the heart. So we talk to them about that and suggest that when they see a friend with one of those attitudes, they can gently encourage that friend, and say, “Let’s not do that, that’s not nice. That hurts somebody.” That’s what our kids do with each other at home.
If it continues, then they remove themselves from the situation and go play somewhere else. But if that’s not possible, if the other child doesn’t hear or they don’t understand, I want our child to come quickly to mommy and daddy or an older sibling. For birthday parties, or other group activities, I always have an older one go with a younger one. If I’m not there, there’s always that older sibling and they know there’s a safe place they can run to.
They can tell mommy or big sister privately whatever is going on. If I need to speak up to that parent, I can, but they know they’ve got a safe quick place to come for refuge. And then I can always whisper and talk into their ear, or take them to a place where I can explain things to them. If they’re wondering, “Well, why did he punch his brother and knock him off the swing?” I can explain that we’re learning and so are they. And believe me, we have not arrived there yet either! The important thing is to always allow it to be a teaching moment.
I try to teach them to lovingly play with other children, and befriend them and to try to speak gently to them because you might be the very one that can encourage them to be nice. It’s not about judging them and saying: well, I would never do that, because we could quickly go back to a few days ago, when the very same thing came out of their mouth!
But when it’s too heavy for them and they’re not able to handle it, they’ve always got that safe place of refuge to run to. We won’t put them in a situation where they’re not able to stand alone when they’re not ready.

Marcus two months old
